The forest swallowed the trail behind me before I had taken twenty steps.
At first, I thought the silence was peaceful.
Then I realized it wasn't silence at all.
It was waiting.
The towering pines stood like ancient sentinels, their branches woven together high above my head until the morning sky disappeared behind a veil of mist. Massive walls of dark stone rose from the forest floor, stacked upon one another as though giants had built a fortress and abandoned it centuries ago.
There was no path.
Only instinct.
Something beyond those rocks was calling me.
I scrambled over loose boulders, grabbing roots and branches to pull myself higher. The stone was slick from the morning fog, but every step only made me more determined.
When I finally reached the top, the forest stretched endlessly in every direction.
Without thinking, I filled my lungs and shouted.
My voice echoed through the valley.
For one breathtaking moment, nothing happened.
Then the mountain answered.
Hundreds of birds burst from the trees.
The sky exploded with wings.
The sound rolled through the forest like thunder, and every creature hidden beneath the canopy seemed to awaken at once.
I laughed.
Not because I had frightened them.
Because for one impossible moment, it felt as though the entire mountain knew I was there.
A gust of wind swept across the ridge, carrying the scent of pine and rain.
Then I saw it.
Half-hidden beneath moss-covered stone...
...a weathered doorway.
It stood alone.
No walls.
No ruins.
Just a wooden door, its iron handle untouched by time.
Curiosity won.
My hand hovered over the iron handle.
Every instinct told me to leave it alone.
Every ounce of curiosity demanded otherwise.
I wrapped my fingers around the cold metal and turned.
The hinges groaned.
A warm breeze drifted through the opening, carrying a scent that didn't belong in the forest. It smelled of old books, cedar, rain...and something I couldn't quite remember.
I stepped through.
The door closed behind me.
Darkness.
Then light.
When my eyes adjusted, the forest was gone.
I was standing in front of a framed photograph.
It was the same forest.
The same towering pines.
The same weathered stone.
Someone brushed past me.
Another person stopped to admire the artwork.
"I could get lost in that place," they whispered.
I smiled.
"So could I."
