Where the Light Waited

Sunset over layered mountain ridges, framed by tall wild plants in the foreground, with warm orange light fading into a soft evening sky.

It was supposed to be a simple hike.

Nothing ambitious.

No destination in mind.

Just a quiet trail, a little fresh air, and enough time to disappear from everything waiting for me back home.

I had been walking for less than an hour when I realized I had taken the wrong turn.

At first, I wasn't worried.

The trail was still there.

Mostly.

Then it narrowed.

Then it faded.

And finally, it was gone.

I stood still for a moment, listening.

No voices.

No footsteps.

No traffic in the distance.

Just the soft movement of leaves brushing against one another and the occasional snap of a twig somewhere deeper in the brush.

I should have turned around.

Instead, I kept going.

Something about being lost felt strangely peaceful.

The path I thought I needed had disappeared, but the world hadn't ended.

The trees opened little by little until the air around me changed.

The breeze came first.

Soft.

Cool.

It moved across my face like a gentle hand, carrying the scent of earth, leaves, and something faintly sweet growing nearby.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time all day, I wasn't thinking about what I needed to do next.

There was no next.

Only that moment.

When I opened my eyes again, the land fell away in front of me.

I had reached the edge of a ridge.

The mountains stretched so far into the distance that I couldn't tell where one ended and another began.

The sun was already sinking.

Its warmth touched my face, softer now than it had been earlier in the day.

Not hot.

Not harsh.

Just warm enough to feel like a final goodbye.

I stood there and let it happen.

The breeze moved through my hair.

The last light rested against my skin.

My breathing slowed without me telling it to.

For a few minutes, I forgot I was lost.

Maybe I wasn't.

Maybe I had simply ended up somewhere I hadn't known I needed to be.

The sun dropped lower.

The world grew quieter.

Everything felt suspended.

Like the mountains were holding their breath.

Like the evening had wrapped itself around me and decided not to let go yet.

I could feel the day leaving.

Not suddenly.

Gently.

Bit by bit.

Warmth fading from my face.

Shadows stretching longer around my feet.

The breeze growing cooler.

I thought about all the days I rushed through without noticing the exact moment one became another.

Afternoon into evening.

Light into shadow.

Noise into stillness.

I wondered how many beautiful things I had missed simply because I had been too busy trying to get somewhere.

A laugh escaped me.

There I was.

Lost on the side of a mountain.

And somehow more present than I had been in weeks.

I reached for my camera.

Not because I thought I could capture the feeling.

I knew I couldn't.

But I wanted proof that the moment had existed.

That I had stood there.

That the breeze had touched my face.

That the setting sun had warmed my skin.

That for one brief moment, I had nowhere else to be.

I lifted the camera.

One frame.

Then another.

The light kept changing.

And I kept watching.

Eventually, the warmth disappeared completely.

The breeze passed over me again.

Colder this time.

I lowered the camera and closed my eyes once more.

When I opened them, someone coughed quietly beside me.

I turned.

A woman stood a few feet away with her arms folded, studying something on the wall.

I followed her gaze.

A framed photograph.

Mountains disappearing into the distance.

Wild plants rising from the shadows.

And between them, a glowing sun suspended just above the horizon.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she leaned slightly closer.

"I feel like I'm standing there," she whispered.

I looked at the photograph again.

At the mountains.

At the disappearing light.

At the two plants reaching toward the sun as though they could somehow convince it to stay.

I smiled.

"Maybe you are."
