Why Are Art Prices So High? The Truth Behind the Value

I get this question a lot — honestly, more often than an artist should. After receiving a hilarious text from a good friend (thank you, Michael!) about his new appreciation for the difficulty of creating art, I realized I needed to write about this. Consider this a little education for those who don’t quite understand what goes into making art — and why it’s priced the way it is.

And yes, this might ruffle a few feathers. But it needs to be said.

1. Artists are not big-box chains.

When you buy from an artist, you’re not getting something mass-produced on a factory line. You’re investing in a unique piece — something created with time, intention, and skill. That rarity makes it far more valuable than a piece you can pick up in a chain store.

And let’s not forget, many artists must pay for festivals, galleries, or shows just to share their work with the world.

2. Pricing includes time, creativity, and costs.

Art isn’t just materials. It’s the countless hours of planning, practicing, creating, refining, and producing. Add in printing costs, shipping, equipment, and inflation — and what the artist actually takes home from a sale is often much less than people imagine.

Professional photographers and artists don’t cut corners. We use trusted, high-quality printing companies to ensure clients receive the absolute best.

3. You’re paying for skill and mastery.

Anyone can snap a photo or put paint to canvas. But not everyone can master composition, light, blending, timing, and technical craft. Tools are only as good as the artist behind them.

Photography isn’t just “pushing a button.” Just like a hammer doesn’t make you a carpenter, a camera doesn’t make you a photographer. It takes training, practice, and vision to create something truly exceptional.

4. Artists add value to your community.

Think of the murals that brighten your city, the music that fills your favorite restaurants, or the art that makes your local spaces feel alive. Artists enrich neighborhoods and bring culture, joy, and individuality into everyday life.

Of course, these are just a few of the reasons prices may seem “high” if you’re comparing us to mass-produced prints or cheap décor. Some artists lower their prices to get by, and that’s their choice. But generally, art has — and should have — a price point that reflects its true value.

So instead of asking “why is this so expensive?” ask yourself “why is this so cheap?”

When you buy from an artist, you’re supporting years of practice, passion, and dedication. You’re getting a unique vision of the world, not a copy of someone else’s.

All in all — keep supporting artists of every kind. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible creators here in Dallas, and they inspire me every single day.
